Our spiritual, moral, social and cultural Intent
Our curriculum aims to enable all young people to become:
- Well rounded pupils who have an insight into different world views and can articulate this and show it in their behaviour towards others
- Can make good relationship decisions due to understanding the rights of themselves and/or others
- Pupils who enact trust, responsibility and resilience in and out of school
The SMSC documents created by all Heads of Department, use the ‘what does SMSC mean’ to plan how they do this across their curriculum, supporting the work of the Personal Development intent in every year group. This therefore prepares our pupils to learn factual information or opinions of others, think critically, evaluate their own ideas against this, debate ideas through class discussion, make persuasive arguments and justify their own thinking.
The impact of this work develops the characters of pupils, who when going out into the world of work are able to navigate through from writing an application, getting through the interview process to retaining a job over time. Our SMSC content allows pupils to develop their verbal and written ability in different settings, working in groups, being creative and critical in a variety of contextual settings.

We promote SMSC through an all round approach in Drama. Group work, both large and small develop ways of working with others and how we lead and take direction also. We explore morals through the plays that we study and include EDI characteristics so that we can discuss, empathise and explore the se, as well as the spirituality and cultural aspects of the characters. Through exploration of these themes and ideas, pupils develop their own character and ideas about right and wrong and learn how and when to apply these in the correct social contexts.

eCONOMICS
We promote SMSC throughout all areas of our curriculum. The implications of economics on society is far reaching. Students develop their understanding through questioning and debating the norms,
whilst trying to develop ways themselves to create change. To do this they have to think creatively about society, the moral codes that it holds and how these can be challenged or upheld. Societies opinions, beliefs and cultural background always features in how an equal and diverse society can not only exist but also thrive.

We also look at spirituality in many of our books, and ensure our curriculum has an EDI focus, not only in authors, but in the characters with the protagonist to name one. Our pupils discuss these themes throughout our spiralised curriculum and develop their thinking as they mature.
